Two-gapping is a technique from defensive linemen that requires one player to play two gaps. Players who are often larger in size are perfect for two-gapping, as they can control more space.

In this article, we’ll show you how to two-gap and how to teach it to your players.

How To Coach The Two Gap Technique

Two gap technique for defensive linemen

Coaching the two-gap techniques requires proper leverage, hand placement, and body positioning. Smaller players who can’t win the one-on-one blocks shouldn’t two-gap, as they may get taken advantage of by bigger offensive linemen. However, if you have a player who is larger in size or stronger than your opponents, two-gapping him could work for your defensive structure.

First, it’s important that your defensive linemen align head up so they are not out-leveraged before the ball is even snapped.

Next, when your defensive lineman fires off the football, they want to play below the chin. This will ensure your defensive linemen’s hips are back and they can play with leverage. A coaching cue we like to use is “play below the chin, you’ll always win.” The key is to try to get knock-back (displacing the offensive lineman 1-2 yards in the backfield), then try to extend to get separation.

Once contact is made, it’s important that the defensive linemen think about separating from the offensive lineman. This includes locking their arms out. Separating helps with a few things:

  • Easier to disengage from the offensive lineman when they are locked out
  • Easier to see where the running back is.

After locking out, the defensive lineman should locate where the running back is and either close the gap with the opponent’s body or violently shed them and make the tackle.
